Phytonutrients are natural chemicals found in plant foods. Although not necessary for proper functioning of our body, they are a significant factor in prevention of many diseases and even cancer and for boosting overall health. Many of them act as antioxidants. Some of the phytonutrients are: carotenoids (giving yellow, orange and red color to vegetables and fruits and including alpha and beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin), ellagic acid, resveratrol and phytoestrogens.
